AUREOLE
As we apprehend change and flux within and between things that we used to conceive of as finite entities, we need new metaphors to express these amorphous relations. We cannot depend upon the old either/or dichotomies with their spurious values and fixed boundaries. It is not too much to say that ambivalence and ambiguity have breached our sense of stability and order. Everything seems to hinge upon moot contingencies beyond our control. Art may aspire to transcend such mundane concerns, but all the artist can offer is his faith in the beautiful unknown, an alternative orientation and an aureole of hope for some distant tomorrow.
