Leaving the moraine rubble of survival and reaching across the abyss to touch or even transcend the acentric orbits and trajectories of invisible, autonomous forces. Here is a four fold metaphor of human aspiration that would seem to embrace almost any endeavor. It is so generic, so archetypal, as to be almost a philosophical cliche. Yet clothed in the colors, textures, shapes of the aesthetic imagination, it takes on mnemonic overtones that resonate with atavistic mysticism. The prismatic, aquamarine striations of the primary theme evince the multifarious thrust of human intelligence, constantly scanning problems and resolutions from various aspects, ever alert to patterns and anomalies, ever open to new avenues. We see ourselves as of the earth and dream of ourselves as of the stars, but the real issue is what goes on in between. Our mental processes are vulnerable to so many forms of deceit, voluntary and otherwise. How do we define terms, elect means, evaluate ends? Ultimately the answers proffered by art are only more cogent rephrasings of the same fundamental questions. They reenchant the cliche and imbue the ordinary with new wonder and celebrate the unknowable.
